PITTSBURGH — Members of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defence are eager to play again. They’re going to have to wait an extra day.

They want to put a forgettable performance against Kansas City in the past and prove themselves this week against an upstart Tampa Bay offence. The Steelers will see where they stand during their first prime-time appearance of the season Monday night against veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and the undefeated Buccaneers.

“We want to get that rotten taste out of our mouths and just get back to playing football,” defensive end Cam Heyward said on Friday. “It’s a great opportunity against a good offence.”

The two-time defending AFC North champions are winless through two weeks. The Steelers (0-1-1) are off to their worst start since 2013, which was also the last time they missed the playoffs.

Last week, Chiefs first-year starter Patrick Mahomes became the second player to throw for six touchdowns against Pittsburgh, and the first since Hall of Famer Jim Kelly did it for Buffalo in 1991. Mahomes threw his six scores to five players and finished with more touchdowns than incomplete passes.

“We’ve got a lot of stuff to prove,” linebacker Bud Dupree said. “There’s a lot of speculation of us not being a good defence, but we know in our heart and soul that we have one of the best defences.”

The Steelers statistically boasted a top-10 defence last season. They ranked No. 5 in yards and two spots back at No. 7 in points, while also establishing a franchise record for sacks in a season.

This season has been much different. The defence has allowed an average of 31.5 points and close to 400 yards per contest through two games.

“We just want to be established and known as one of the best defences,” cornerback Joe Haden said. “We haven’t really put that on tape for the first two games. The quicker we can get back out there, the quicker we can show everybody what we can do.”

Haden expects to play Monday after missing last week’s game against Kansas City with a hamstring injury. The ninth-year veteran was a full practice participant for the second straight day Friday. Haden will be a welcome addition to a defence that had communication issues, lacked a consistent pass rush and couldn’t get off the field.

Defensive co-ordinator Keith Butler said this week that he simplified the game plan to allow players to play fast, improve communication and eliminate big plays through the secondary. Butler felt his players tried to overcompensate and do too much at times against the Chiefs.

“I jumped offsides when we were down because I was trying to time the snap and get to the quarterback,” Dupree said. “Somebody has to make a play and I was trying to put it on my shoulders and make a play, and sometimes that’s trying to do too much.”

Tampa Bay (2-0) is off to its best start in eight years and features the NFL’s top-ranked offence. The Bucs are unbeaten thanks in large part to Fitzpatrick, the 35-year-old journeyman who has thrived with suspended quarterback Jameis Winston sidelined. Fitzpatrick is playing the best football of his 14-year career, throwing for 819 yards and eight touchdowns in Tampa Bay’s first two games.

The Steelers insist their defence is prepared for the challenge.

“We’re just ready to go,” Heyward said. “I’m ready to move forward. I think we cleaned up a lot of problems. We had a lot to address, but it won’t be addressed until Monday. Hopefully, we can put on a good performance.”

NOTES: S Morgan Burnett (groin), G David DeCastro (hand), T Marcus Gilbert (hamstring) and DE Stephon Tuitt (illness) did not practice on Friday. G Ramon Foster (knee) and DE Tyson Alualu (shoulder) were full practice participants for the second straight day.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams said everything is fine between him and Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis after the two spoke face-to-face this week for the first time since Adams accused Davis of “head hunting” for a blindside hit that gave him a concussion.

Adams said Thursday that Davis sought him out on Monday, when the NFC players arrived in Orlando for the Pro Bowl, and apologized for the hit, which occurred late in the Panthers’ 31-24 victory at Bank of America Stadium on Dec. 17.

“He came and hollered at me the first day,” Adams told ESPN. “It happened about a little over a month ago now so we kind of settled it. I’m trying to let bygones be bygones.

“Obviously you don’t forget things like that, but at the same time we’re teammates out here and you want to be civil and still have a good time so that’s what it’s about.”

The day after the play happened, Adams, via Twitter, accused Davis of “head hunting” because he led with his helmet. Adams posted a series of tweets critical of the hit and Davis, who responded to one of the tweets and apologized.

“In no way was I trying to hurt you,” Davis tweeted. “My first instinct was turn and make a block. In all sincerity I do apologize. I truly respect you as a player and I made a mistake!”

That was the second concussion that Adams had suffered in 2017.

Davis was suspended two games by the NFL for the hit. He told ESPN on Thursday that he wanted to apologize to Adams in person. “That was one of the things that I was most looking forward to, having that opportunity to sit down face-to-face with him and kind of explain my side of that situation, officially apologize to him face-to-face,” Davis said. “It wasn’t anything malicious and I said that to him in the message, but just I just really wanted to reiterate what I said to him in that message on social media.”

Davis said it was received well and that Adams accepted his apology.

“He said he understood,” Davis said. “He said that he was emotional when it happened. He was mad. But we’ve talked it out. We’re in a good place right now.”

Having won the Walter Payton Man of the Year, Byron “Whizzer” White NFL Man of the Year and Bart Starr Award in his past, Davis has enjoyed a sterling reputation across the league when it comes to character.
He acknowledged that it’s been a challenge, however, conforming to new league rules as they pertain to hard hitting and avoiding the head and neck area. It was a much different league when he entered it in 2004 and he admitted that he is still figuring out how to adjust.

“The guys I looked up to when I started — Derrick Brooks, Ray Lewis — the way that those guys played the game. I just try to mirror my game after that,” Davis said. “But at the same time, we’re moving to a different place in the NFL and guys like myself just have to understand that we have to comply with the rules.”

Davis added, “It’s definitely a lot harder to conform. It takes some time, just changing up the style of play.”

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler took full responsibility for his three-interception performance in Sunday’s 24-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

“Three turnovers,” a disappointed Cutler said. “I’m responsible for all three, no matter what the situation was.”

If the past two weeks confirmed anything, it’s that the Dolphins this season closely followed the same inconsistent path of their starting quarterback.

Last week, Cutler was phenomenal. He carved up the defending champion New England Patriots on Monday Night Football to the tune of three touchdowns in a Miami win. When Cutler plays that well, the Dolphins are capable of beating anyone.

However, Cutler took major steps backward on Sunday in what was a must-win game for Miami (6-8). Cutler prevented the Dolphins from making any kind of second-half comeback and all but ended their chances of making the postseason. In addition to the three interceptions, Cutler also had a pair of likely picks dropped by the Bills; and he fumbled four times, as well — although all were recovered by Miami.

After this loss, the best the Dolphins can finish is 8-8 and revert to a spoiler role in the final two weeks.

“It’s a great locker room. I don’t think we’re going to have any issues with guys shutting it down,” Cutler said. “We’ve been in a few games where we’ve been two scores out and guys find ways to go out there and make some plays. As long as they let us play, we’ll be ready.”

Cutler earned the “Good Jay, Bad Jay” moniker for his inconsistency in previous stops with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears. We saw some of that this season, which could be his last with Miami.

The Dolphins must make a decision at quarterback, and Cutler, who was coerced out of retirement to sign a one-year, $10 million contract, doesn’t appear part of the plan. His inconsistency is one of the primary reasons Cutler has a sub-.500 record (74-77) as a starter. The Dolphins cannot afford to go that route for another season — and certainly not at that price.

Miami is more likely to stick with former starter Ryan Tannehill, who is recovering from knee surgery, or go in a different direction via the draft or free agency. The Dolphins have surrounding talent but need a quarterback who is steady on a weekly basis.

The Dolphins rolled the dice and tried the Cutler roller-coaster this season. There were a few highs, such as the victory versus the Patriots last week; but overall, he didn’t take Miami where it wanted to go.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t change quarterbacks on Sunday from Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes. They didn’t need to.

Smith looked more like the MVP candidate he was early in the season than the struggling quarterback he’s been in recent weeks. It took him less than five minutes to throw two touchdown passes, or one more than he’d thrown in the last two games combined.

Smith later threw touchdown passes of 79 and 40 yards to Tyreek Hill, and the four TD passes overall allowed him to tie his single-season best of 23, set in his first Chiefs season in 2013. He threw for 366 yards, and also had a 70-yard scramble in the second quarter to set up a field goal.

Still it wasn’t enough. The Chiefs lost their fourth straight game and sixth in their past seven, 38-31 to the New York Jets.

At 6-6 overall, their games don’t get any more critical than the next two, both at home against AFC West opponents. They face the Oakland Raiders next Sunday and the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15.

Smith said he wasn’t motivated Sunday by any talk that he might be replaced by Mahomes if the Chiefs didn’t snap out of their offensive slump.

“Zero extra [pressure],” Smith said. “If you’ve got to have some extra mo or something, absolutely not. I haven’t thought about it. I’m trying to go out and play good ball. I realize the last couple of weeks on offense hasn’t been good enough for us. You’re [eager] to get back on track. You’re [eager] to get it going again and get back to playing the way we know we can play.

“We’ve been in some close ones, a bunch here lately, and come out on the wrong side. Just keep fighting and try to find a way. Obviously we know we have a couple of big division games coming up. We’ve got to assess this and then we’ve got to get ready.”

The Chiefs’ 31 points were more than they’ve had in a game since Week 5. But the Chiefs’ defense collapsed, allowing almost 500 yards to the Jets. New York converted 13 of 20 third-down plays, and the Chiefs committed eight penalties.
Four of Kansas City’s penalties were on the Jets’ go-ahead touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. They at one point made the Jets kick a field goal but nose tackle Bennie Logan was penalized for unnecessary roughness, giving the Jets a fresh set of downs.

The Chiefs had a similar penalty-filled final drive in their October loss to the Oakland Raiders.

“There is a little frustration there,” coach Andy Reid said. “I’m not saying [the penalties] shouldn’t have been called … but they were called and after awhile you’re down there, you’re competing and we’ve had a couple of games where we’ve had that.”

They also changed their offensive playcaller from Reid to coordinator Matt Nagy. That didn’t appear to make much of a difference. The Chiefs did get the two early touchdown passes, both to Travis Kelce. But both came in Kansas City’s first 15 snaps. The Chiefs generally script those plays well before kickoff; they are not selected in the moment

Buffalo Bills defensive end Adolphus Washington was found not guilty of a misdemeanor weapons charge on Monday, according to Hamilton County (Ohio) Court records.

Ohio Judge Jackie Ginocchio found Washington not guilty in the non-jury trial stemming from his July 11 arrest on a concealed weapons charge in Sharonville, Ohio.

Per the arrest and investigation report, Washington was at Splash Cincinnati Water Park as police officers were clearing out a crowd in a lot. Washington “reached for and displayed a gun while sitting inside his vehicle; just feet away from officers. [Washington] did not inform officers beforehand.”

Lt. Keith Schoonover of the Sharonville Police Department told NFL.com that Washington has a valid concealed carry weapon permit in the state of Ohio. The charge is a violation of a subsection of the state law, according to Schoonover.

“He wasn’t arrested for having the gun, it was how he handled the situation,” Schoonover told NFL.com. Schoonover added that Washington cooperated with the officers at the scene.

As a rookie with the Bills last season, the former third-round pick recorded 2.5 sacks in 15 games played, including 11 starts. He was suspended from his final collegiate game at Ohio State — the 2016 Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame — following a citation for solicitation.

Washington played primarily with the first-team defense this week against the Baltimore Ravens.
